Understanding NITROX for Scuba Diving
NITROX (Enriched Air / EANx) is a breathing gas blend with a higher oxygen percentage than standard air, which contains 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. For recreational scuba diving, NITROX typically starts at 22% oxygen, with blends up to 40% available for certified divers. If you wish to use blends with higher oxygen percentages, the TDI Advanced NITROX Course is required.
At Chang Diving Center, we are proud to operate Koh Chang’s only full-service NITROX filling station. Whether you dive with us or another dive center on the island, all NITROX blends come from our state-of-the-art facility.
Nitrox diving for recreational scuba
Nitrox diving simply means breathing an Enriched Air mix (often EAN32 or EAN36) that has more oxygen and less nitrogen than normal air. On every dive you still analyse your cylinder, respect the maximum operating depth (MOD) for that mix, plan with your buddy or dive computer, and stay within the limits of your certification—just as you would on air.
For recreational divers, nitrox is not primarily a “deep diving gas”; it is used to extend no-decompression time, lower nitrogen loading, and shorten surface intervals between repetitive dives. You need a recognised Nitrox / Enriched Air certification before diving nitrox—our Nitrox Diver course on Koh Chang covers theory, gas analysis, and (optional) in-water training.
Why Use NITROX?
There is a common misconception that NITROX is exclusively for deep diving. In reality, recreational divers use NITROX for completely different reasons than technical divers. Here’s why NITROX is beneficial for recreational sports diving:
- Extended No-Decompression Limits: NITROX allows you to stay underwater longer without entering decompression.
- Reduced Nitrogen Absorption: Lower nitrogen levels mean less nitrogen buildup in your bloodstream.
- Shorter Surface Intervals: NITROX enables shorter breaks between dives, typically reduced to a minimum of one hour.
- Increased Energy: Many divers feel less fatigue after NITROX dives due to higher oxygen levels.
- More Repetitive Dives: With NITROX, you can safely enjoy more dives in a single day.
These advantages make NITROX an excellent choice for divers looking to maximize their time underwater and enhance their overall diving experience.
The Risks of NITROX
While NITROX offers significant benefits, it’s essential to understand its risks, such as oxygen toxicity at deeper depths. This is why proper certification is mandatory. At Chang Diving Center, we offer NITROX courses that teach you everything you need to know about the safe use of Enriched Air.
How to Calculate Maximum Operating Depth (MOD)
The MOD of a NITROX blend is the depth at which the partial pressure of oxygen (PPO₂) reaches a safe limit, typically 1.4 bar for recreational diving. For example:
| Blend | O₂ Fraction | Max PPO₂ | MOD Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EAN32 (N32) | 0.32 | 1.4 bar | 1.4 / 0.32 − 10 | 33.7 m |
| EAN36 (N36) | 0.36 | 1.4 bar | 1.4 / 0.36 − 10 | 28.9 m |
This calculation ensures that you stay within safe limits during your dives. You’ll learn more about these calculations during your NITROX certification course.
